Management Strategies to Improve Waste Tire Recycling Efficiency


Abstract
With the increasement of the number of automobiles, the generation of waste tires are increasing in Korea. Currently the recycling rate of waste tires is no more than 30% and the rest 70% is not recycled. The purpose of this paper was to evaluate the current promising technology for improving waste tire recycling and to suggest management strategies to improve the recycling efficiency. There are some promising technology to treat waste tires;incineration of waste tires in the cement kiln, generation of electricity by waste tire incineration, the use of waste tires in rubber aspalt. Among these, the incineration of waste tires in the cement kiln and the rubber aspalt technique are considered to have economic feasibility in Korea. For the management strategy to improve the waste tire recycling efficiency, several suggestions were made;solid establishment of waste tire collection system, governmental support to the waste tire recycling industry, research and development for the waste tire recycling, and the development of new reuse and recycling source for waste tires. Among these, the soild establishment of waste tire collection system is considered to be most important.
